Two Course Types: Hybrid or Onsite

Hybrid - Requires completion of twelve online modules followed by 1 day of lectures and hands-on training in a classroom.

Onsite - Requires completion of an online pretest prior to attending a 2-day classroom-based course.

All students will complete the PEPP written examination during the onsite portion of their course.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

• Hybrid Course is a 10.25 hour course
  • 4.75 hours of online learning plus,
  • 5.5 hours of onsite classroom instruction (includes breaks/lunch)
• Onsite Course is a 9.25 hour face-to-face course including breaks/lunch.

Advanced Life Support (ALS)

• Hybrid Course is a 19.75 hour course
  • 11.75 hours of online learning plus,
  • 8 hours of onsite classroom instruction (includes breaks and lunch)
• Onsite Course is a 16 hour face-to-face course including breaks/lunch.

Go to the PEPP website and select “Enroll in a Course” under the Providers drop-down area in the upper right corner of the page. In the search field, select from the state, country, or name of CC. The results will show a list of the open courses available. Each course listed will contain: name of Course Coordinator, course date(s), course location, course description, and an "Enroll" button to sign up for the course.

The AAP does not charge instructors to conduct PEPP courses, and, therefore, do not mandate or make recommendations for what to charge for courses, as each case is different. Due to several factors, the overall cost to implement a PEPP course can vary. For example, the course is mostly equipment based. Since medical equipment is expensive, instructors are not expected to purchase ALL of the materials. Rather, some instructors borrow various equipment from other agencies.

With regard to the Medical Advisor and Faculty Members, there is no set price for their compensation. Some individuals volunteer their services or others may help to attain CEU’s. A few choose to receive a small honorarium.

A checklist for “Preparing for the PEPP Course” in the PEPP Instructor's Toolkit may help you determine the cost.

To successfully complete a PEPP Course, providers must:

1. Participate in the complete PEPP course taught by a PEPP Course Coordinator
2. Complete the precourse work
3. Attend the in-person course and pass the final examination

Students who successfully meet these requirements are eligible to receive a PEPP Course Completion Certificate. The Course Completion Certificate is electronically sent to the student and is valid for 2 years.

The system may state that you no longer have Course Coordinator privileges. It is possible that you did not meet the CC renewal requirements (instruct 2 PEPP courses in the 2-year renewal period).

If you believe that this is incorrect, please email pepp@aap.org with the course dates and, if applicable, the names of the Course Coordinators that you assisted (if you acted as an Assisting Instructor). A member of the AAP staff can then assist you in correcting the record.

The AAP has confidentiality guidelines for instructors and providers. Therefore, we cannot provide verification of status or personal information through a third party request.

The PEPP Online Instructor's Toolkit includes all materials a CC will need to instruct the course, including PowerPoint Presentations, Lecture Notes, Skills Stations, Scenarios, Course Schedules, Course Administration, video segments and course interactivities.

This is likely the most confused title and is often used in place of “Course Coordinator” (CC).

All Course Coordinators are Instructors, but not all Instructors are Course Coordinators (CCs).

If an Instructor is not a CC, they will not have a record in the PEPP database, nor will they ever coordinate a course of their own. Therefore, they are always assisting a CC.

A CC should never list themselves on a roster as also being an “Instructor.” As a CC, it is part of their duty to be present and active in the instruction of each course they coordinate (as stated in the Instructor's Online Toolkit and the PEPP website). There is no need for them to list themselves twice on a roster.

Two Course Types:

This could be for a variety of reasons:

1. The roster entered is only saved in the database and not yet submitted to us. Please login to the PEPP website and go through the submission process.
2. The lead PEPP CC responsible for submitting the roster may not have done so yet.
3.  Another individual who submitted the roster for the lead CC inadvertently left the person’s name off the roster.
4. The roster may have been initially rejected, and the CC did not re-submit it with the required changes. Contact the lead CC to check status of the roster.
5. The roster was submitted, but the email address for the assisting instructor was added incorrectly.

Please contact us with the course(s) information (course date and name of lead CC).

Course Coordinators are emailed a certificate to the email address they registered with during the application process.  

Replacement certificates can be printed by logging into your PEPP Course Coordinator account here.  Go to the Profile tab and scroll down to the bottom of the page. The download certificate button will be located to the right of the Save Profile option.

1. Go to www.peppsite.com and select "Find a Course Coordinator" under the Provider drop-down in the upper right corner of the page.
2. Select “Advanced Search” and enter designated state, country, or zip code.  A list of all Course Coordinators in that region will appear.

Course Coordinators must use the "Forgot Username or Password?" link under the "Course Coordinator Login" page.  A link to reset the password will be e-mailed to the e-mail address listed on the account.  As with all e-mail systems, there may be some delay in receiving this message. Be sure to check your Spam/Junk/Firewall folder.

The PEPP Course represents over a decade of collaboration between physicians, nurses, and prehospital professionals. PEPP began in 1990 as a part of a State of California initiative and has since expanded both domestically and internationally. In 1995 the first PEPP course was conducted, and in 1998 the AAP reorganized and expanded the course. The 4th edition materials are now available through Jones and Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group or the AAP.

A PEPP CC is the lead instructor, and has the responsibility of submitting the course roster.
A CC falls into 2 categories:

ALS CC

May teach both ALS and BLS courses

BLS CC

May only teach BLS courses

CCs must instruct, or assist with 2 courses every 2-years in order to automatically renew their status.

Go to the PEPP website.

Select the “Enroll in a Course” link under the Providers drop-down menu in the upper right corner.

Type your city, state, or PEPP Course Coordinator’s name into the search field.

Select the “Enroll” button next to the course you are registering for.

Enter your email address. Note: Your account will be associated with this email address. It is critical that you continue to use the same email address throughout the process. Click “Next”.

If you have an existing account with Jones and Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group, enter your password. If you do not have an existing account, please create a password, and click “Next”. (Password Requirements: minimum 8 characters, including one capital letter, one lowercase letter, one numeral, and one special character (example: !, #, %)).

Enter or update your Personal Information and select “Enroll in Course”.

Your Course Coordinator will receive an email indicating your registration.

PEPP Course Coordinator status is valid for 2 years. A Course Coordinator must teach at least 2 PEPP courses within a 2-year active period to maintain instructor status. Instructor credentials are renewed automatically. AAP contacts instructors by email, so it is important to keep your email address (which is your username) current on your Jones and Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group account.

To redeem an access code, visit the Jones and Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group website. Select the “Redeem Code” link in the upper right corner of the page and follow the steps to create or log in to your account. When redeeming your access code, you will need to select the type of course you are attending (ALS Onsite, ALS Hybrid, BLS Onsite, or BLS Hybrid). If you are unsure of your course format, check with your Course Coordinator before redeeming your access code.

The AAP is approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE). Participants who successfully complete the PEPP Course are eligible to receive continuing education units (CEUs) through CAPCE. Participants must select the option to receive CEUs during the access code redemption process on the Jones & Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group website, or, after the course, request CEUs through their JBL/PSG account. CAPCE certificates will be delivered electronically to eligible participants.

Course Credits:

• BLS Hybrid Course provides 15 hours of CEUs
• BLS Onsite Course provides 8.25 hours CEUs
• ALS Hybrid Course provides 18.75 hours of CEUs
• ALS Onsite Course provides 13 hours CEUs

The following criteria is required for becoming a Course Coordinator:

1. Be a physician (MD or DO), registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, paramedic or EMT
2. Have EMT teaching experience OR experience in coordinating another nationally recognized standardized course for teaching prehospital personnel
3. Successfully complete the PEPP provider course at the level for which you wish to conduct courses (ALS or BLS). You must be a current PEPP Provider (i.e. have taken a PEPP course in the last 2 years).
4. Submit an online application to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
5. After approval by the AAP, complete the online PEPP Course Coordinator Orientation module. A score of 80 or higher must be achieved in order to pass.
6. Complete the PEPP, Fourth Edition Course Coordinator Orientation.
7. Be knowledgeable of the most current PEPP course material and administrative policies.

PEPP Precourse Work

All students must redeem an access code in order to complete the required precourse work for their PEPP course. Students will redeem an access code online on the Jones & Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group website. The access code is located within the inside cover of a new PEPP textbook or purchased individually and allows access to the pretest or modules.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Public Safety Group , a division of Jones & Bartlett Learning, partnered to develop unique training programs (PEPP, PedFACTs, BLAST, and APLS) that focus on the assessment and treatment of pediatric patients.

The Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) program ratios are:

• Skill stations require a Faculty-to-student ratio of 1:6.
• Case-based scenarios require a Faculty-to-student ratio of 1:10.

PEPP Course Coordinators may begin teaching PEPP, Fourth Edition Courses once they have completed the PEPP Course Coordinator Online Orientation and obtained the PEPP, Fourth Edition Instructor Toolkit.

Effective January 1, 2021, PEPP Course Coordinators must be utilizing the PEPP, Fourth Edition materials when facilitating their courses.

Course Coordinators are required to purchase and successfully complete the PEPP, Fourth Edition Course Coordinator Online Orientation (PEPP Course Coordinator Orientation) and obtain the PEPP, Fourth Edition Instructor Toolkit (PEPP Online Instructor's ToolKit) prior to instructing their first Fourth Edition Course.
